PROPOSAL Spring 2017

I am reminded every time driving down I-25 of the horrifying destruction to our environment through fracking. In 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated that 70-140 billion gallons of water is used to fracture 35,000 wells in the United States each year. To extract the natural gas, our society depends on so heavily, is a mixture of water, proppants and chemicals that are pumped into the shale deposits of the Earth’s crust. Communities in Colorado surrounded by these fracking sites remain blinded to the health concerns, ground water contamination and polluted air quality caused by these processes. This issue fuels my passion to educate society through my oil and mix media paintings.
Through research of the political and social view points, I want to create awareness about this controversial environmental issue that closely affects everyone living near these sites. By using toxic materials such as car oil, resin and oil paints, I evoke an understanding of how serious this subject is. If we want mankind to survive this destruction, our society must consider sustainable choices with alternative processes to fuel our energy needs. My art acts as a catalyst for healing our planet and informing society the disadvantages and consequences of fracking.
